This event was proposed by Totok Purwanto, a member of Bandung branch of IRPS who was on duty in Cirebon, and held in Cirebon locomotive Depot on March 22, 2009. Cirebon was located 185 kilometers north-east of Bandung, West Java.

There were at least 27 IRPS members who participated in the event. Actually CC200 15 had been cleaned a day before due to a visit from Commercial Director of Indonesian State Railway company (PT Kereta Api/PT KA) Sulistyo W. Therefore, the team only wiped remaining dust and oil on the body. Chief of Operation Region III of PT KA Purnomo Radiq appreciated what the team had done. The team also handed over a photo of Djoko Kendil special trainset (by courtesy of Ian Antono of Eastern Exploitation Area) to staff of the locomotive depot.

The purpose of this event was to show our concern to the “founding father” of IRPS. Although it was only a small event, it gave great meaning because the employees of PT KA who cared about CC200 15 as a historical railway asset needed our support by any means.

At least 25 IRPS members gathered under Lempuyangan flyover, Yogyakarta, to visit the Yogyakarta Balai Yasa (Workshop) and BPTT (a school for locomotive engineers) Yogyakarta on February 16, 2009. They came from Jakarta, Bandung, Purwokerto, Surabaya and, of course, Yogyakarta. Head of Production Unit Bambang Trisilo and some staff members of BY Pengok greeted the team.

Yogyakarta workshop, then Centraal Werkplaats, was built in 1914 by Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij. Its main duty was to overhaul locomotives, coaches and wagons. In 1942, Japanese administration took over railway companies and the workshop. Then Indonesian government took them over on September 28, 1945 and established a railway company named Djawatan Kereta Api Republik Indonesia. The date was commemorated as Railway Day. The workshop then changed its name to Balai Karya, but its main duty was still the same. In 1959 Balai Karya was changed to Balai Yasa Traksi and it only overhauled locomotives.

In general, the main duties of the workshop were as follows:1. To plan and execute locomotives maintenance and repairment.2. To guarantee the quality of its products.3. To repair broken locomotives and maintain ready-to-operate locomotives.4. To maintain work tools.5. To plan, execute, report and evaluate maintenance and repairment budget.6. To execute final locomotive technique design.7. To make efficient use of human and general resources.

The locomotives were repaired and maintained regularly. Diesel-electric locomotives underwent daily, monthly, bimonthly, trimonthly, six monthly and yearly maintenance check in locomotive depots. After travelling 325000 kilometers or every 2 years, the locomotives underwent semifinal check. After travelling 650000 kms or every 4 years, the locomotives underwent final check in the workshop. Diesel-hydraulic locomotives underwent daily, 500 hourly, 1000 hourly, 2000 hourly, 4000 hourly and 8000 hourly maintenance. After 12000 hours, the locomotives underwent semifinal check in the workshop. After 24000 hours, the locomotive underwent final check in the workshop.

Bambang said that in 2010 all diesel-hydraulic locomotives would be removed and replaced by diesel-electric locomotives of CC204 class. However, the workshop still maintained and repaired diesel multiple units. He also said that in 2009 the workshop would repair and maintain generator coaches and would assemble CC204 class locomotives. After the discussion, the team handed over souvenirs (IRPS t-shirts) to Bambang and Chief of Public Relations of Operation Region VI Eko Budiyanto and appointed them as honourable members of IRPS. The team then were granted permission to visit the workshop and the disused-locomotive yard.At 3 PM, the team visited BPTT. The team had a discussion with some staff members of BPTT, mostly about locomotive engineers, train conductors, requirements to be a locomotive engineer, etc.

The special train’s destination was Mojokerto Station with no stopover. The engineer of CC200 15 was Ukardi from Cirebon, West Java, who had a license to drive CC200 class locomotives. He was assisted by Nana, who was also from Cirebon. The train entered Platform 6 of Surabaya Gubeng Station at 9 AM after Mutiara Timur departed from the same platform. It departed the station 25 minutes later. It sped smoothly for about 40-50 km/h. Finally, it arrived at Mojokerto Station one and a half hour later.

At 11:20 AM the train departed Mojokerto Station to return to Surabaya Gubeng Station. This time, it was a little bit faster, about 50-60 km/h. While on the way, it stopped after passing the bridge over Brantas River to allow the team to take pictures of the train. Unlike the previous journey, it stopped at Krian Station where Sancaka from Yogyakarta overtook it. After arriving at Platform 6 of Surabaya Gubeng Station at 2 PM, the train departed for Surabaya Gubeng Workshop.

There were three small incidents on the test run. The first incident was CC200 15 was unable to recouple to Djoko Kendil cars in Mojokerto Station, but the problem was soon to be fixed by staff of Surabaya Gubeng Workshop by readjusting the couplers. The second incident was there was oil leakage in the cylinder liner of the locomotive. The other was two electric generators failed to function properly, therefore all electrical devices in Djoko Kendil 1 and 2 could not be used.

On the same date of IRPS’ 6th anniversary on June 25, 2008, Balai Yasa (Workshop) Surabaya Gubeng conducted a test run of a special train. The trainset consisted of CC20015 and Djoko Kendil passenger cars. The trainset was painted in dark green and light yellow livery, a livery of the then Perusahaan Jawatan Kereta Api. The train ran from Surabaya Gubeng Station in East Java to Purwokerto Station in Central Java via Yogyakarta.

CC200 class locomotives were the first diesel-electric locomotives in Indonesia. They were manufactured by General Electric Co in 1953, factory model UM/106T. These 96-tonne locomotives had unique Co-B-Co wheel arrangements so that they could run on R25-type rail tracks. They hauled passenger cars used by Asian-African Conference—also known as Bandung Conference—delegations in Bandung, West Java, in 1955. CC200 15 was the last survivor of its kind. Before being refurbished in Surabaya, it was used to serve local trains and sometimes became a shunter in Cirebon, West Java.

Coupled to CC200 15 were two passenger cars, namely Djoko Kendil I and Djoko Kendil II. Both cars were manufactured in 1938. Djoko Kendil I used to be an inspection car numbered IW 38201. It entered Surabaya Gubeng Workshop in the first quarter of 2008. The car was refurbished so that it can be used for meetings and discussions, while at the same time sightseeing. It was renumbered to IW 38212. Onboard the air-conditioned Djoko Kendil I were an oval table that can be used for meetings, beautifully carved seats, a mini-bar, a 36-inch flat screen television, an operator compartment and a toilet. It could carry 20 passengers. Djoko Kendil II used to be a helper car numbered NRU 38201. It entered Surabaya Gubeng Workshop in the 2nd quarter of 2008, then was renumbered to IW 38221. It was refurbished to be an observation car. Its interior included features of an observation seat and a couch, 10 reclining seats, a 36-inch flat screen television, a crew compartment, a bagage compartment and a toilet. It could carry 28 passengers and was also air-conditioned. Both cars’ interior sides were covered by plywood.
